This is a very challenging technique and style that is the next natural step from last week's lesson, Harmonizing With Open Strings. This again, is a style I picked up largely from my late friend, the great Danny Gatton, and if you spend any time listening to some of his improvisations you’ll be sure to pick up on some of these banjo-like runs.
Since the “answer” drone licks in these are always two open strings played right after each other, I often refer to this style as “Country Flamenco,” since it mimics the style that many Flamenco players use in their fingerstyle attack.
The hybrid style of picking is quite necessary for this technique, and when played rapidly enough you can create a really nice “seamless” sound that will give you a smooth effect when you play these blues and country licks.
This is truly a great style that’s a real challenge, but equally rewarding and exciting. Unquestionably a style that will be worth the effort, and will become a welcome part of your lick library!—Arlen Roth
